SHOES AND TEXTILES
I have been experimenting with shoe making, thanks to the Cordwainer Shop in New Hampshire and Molly Grant, in particular. You can learn how to make shoes in many places--Molly often teaches at folk schools around the country. On the homefront this resulted in the purchase of a Singer sewing machine from the 1930s, made for the home sewer who might just want to sew horse blankets and the like. Kilims as slippers or bags? Lots of little leather tools....sewing banding onto short sleeve shirts and custom tailoring collars. I did a lot of hand sewing, making groupings of textiles that were meant to hang together for a show at the MURAL gallery in Hobart, NY. Drafting and drawing patterns for clothing inspired by a smattering of books illustrated by John Peacock, a costumer designer and illustrator who showcases styles from 1900 onward has been fun. That's what's happening around these parts.
